The Story of Esther’s Prison Release

To appoint unto them that mourn in Zion, to give unto them beauty for ashes, the oil of joy for mourning, the garment of praise for the spirit of heaviness; that they might be called trees of righteousness, the planting of the LORD, that he might be glorified.

Isaiah 61:3

In 2014 Esther was released from prison. It was her day in court after a 7 year detention. The inmates questioned her as she left for court with a small paper bag, that held her personal items with her bible and tooth brush. She told the girls she wouldn’t be back —that “by faith” she was going to be released. She reassured them though, “I will come to visit and bring you soap.”

At her immediate release, the VFA teachers, along with the prison chaplain, reintegrated Esther back into her community and her family members, where we held a prayer meeting in her front yard. Esther humbly stood before her village people to share her testimony of repentance and restoration. Her family awarded her a half-acre piece of land, where an estranged brother built a cozy mud house. Her grown children, filled the rooms with furniture and food, love and acceptance… all still in arms we left. Esther continued her VFA Bible School course and graduated recently. Last week Esther walked proudly into the prison classroom with a case of soap on her head to fulfill her promise. The class fell into celebration lifting Esther high and marching around the room.

Esther stood confidently giving her testimony of God’s deliverance in her life because of the Bible teachings VFA brought into her life. She spoke hope and encouragement into her sister inmate’s lives. There were tears and laughter, singing and dancing—all a celebration of what God can do when we submit our defiant will to His love, grace and forgiveness.

That isn’t the end to Esther’s story. Our special speaker that day at the prison was Linda Bolton, the Christian author and founder along with her husband Dale of the Organic’s for Orphans Ministry. The Bolton’s have given Esther a grant to start school in January to learn to plant and grow organic vegetables and medicinal plants to cure and prevent diseases prevalent in Africa. This method of planting produces four times that of conventional farming.

Esther will learn a skill of survival that can lead to a business selling organic and medicinal products. The future Satan thought he was destroying, has been turned around for Esther. God took everything meant for her harm and glorified the Kingdom… again!
