A Salutation to the Dawn!

A Salutation to the Dawn!

“Think”, said Dante, the famous Italian poet of the Middle Ages, “this day will never dawn again!”

Life is slipping away with incredible speed. We are racing through space at the rate of nineteen miles every   second…so let us grasp on to the moment at hand… today is our most precious possession and is our only sure possession.

Imagine this when the hurry scurry of today’s technology and convenient lifestyle did not exist… Horace a Roman poet wrote thirty years before Christ was born…Happy the man, and happy he alone. He, who can call today his own.

If I have learned anything in the mission field of Africa, I have learned to live one day at a time and to own that day instead of it owning me. Literally every lovely dawn… even with lack and poverty hovering around us… is another day to trust God to provide.

Jesus instructed, “Give us this day our daily bread.”  His words from the Mount, “Take therefore no thought for the morrow; for the morrow shall take thought for the things of itself. Jesus’ spoke these words during King James reign when the word “thought” frequently meant “anxiety.”  In the more modern versions of today’s Bible Jesus quote would read, “Have no anxiety for the morrow.”

Our Kenyan friends have taught us much just by observing the way they humbly live one day at a time. Although forced into such a life style in most cases… their mere demeanor reads, “no thought of tomorrow…but  live today to the fullest”. When we drop by their humble homes to visit, my husband and I know they spread their table many times with their last chi and bread to serve us. We are often tempted to politely decline their last crumb but the culture here is to serve. They will enjoy today and let tomorrow take care of itself. Just like Jesus taught!

Dr. Israel Bram, a famous thyroid specialist kept a hanging on the wall of his waiting room for his anxious patients to contemplate. It read…

Relaxation and Recreation

Have faith in God… learn to sleep well…

Love good music… see the funny side of life

And health and happiness will be yours.

My New Year wish for my family and friends is that you will wake every dawn in 2017 with a salutation in your heart to another dawn… another opportunity to live life to the fullest. I wish you to live big… to serve God and others…to laugh at corny jokes… and to love with all your heart.

Happy New Year!
